A tarot deck is designed to reflect life back at u A tarot deck is designed to reflect life back at us, which means the suits aren’t just four cute symbols picked to help move the design of the Minor Arcana along! The suits represent the four elements of the Universe, which rule the four main areas of our lives.

Tarot 101: Understanding the elemental meaning of the suits is particularly helpful when you are drawing a general daily card without asking a specific question. It’s also helpful when you ask a more general question like “What do I need to focus on?” or “What is it time to release?” In these cases, knowing what the suit stands for helps give more direction and focus to the tarot reading. If a certain suit is prevalent or noticeably missing from a larger spread, that’s interesting to look at too!

So swipe through for some tarot reading basics on the elemental suits of the Minor Arcana, and save for easy reference! 🔥💧💨🌿

I came across the term "querent" a lot when I was first learning about tarot and reading a bunch of tarot books. The "querent" is the person for whom the tarot cards are being read. In other words, it's who is inquiring (same root word, see?) something of the cards.

When you're reading tarot for yourself (which is how I work with the cards the most), you are simultaneously the reader AND the querent since you are both asking AND answering the tarot question.

What other words have you come across on your tarot journey that you didn't understand at first - or maybe still don't!? Let me know below!

1. What am I being called to explore on my own?
2. What am I being called to share with others?
3. In what area of life can I practice flexibility?
4. In what area of life can I practice commitment?

We often hear tarot readers discussing whether the We often hear tarot readers discussing whether they have studied the foundations of tarot or are purely intuitive readers. If you’ve been following me for awhile, you’ll know that my personal tarot reading philosophy and style is that both are required, along with a few other things that would round out my personal tarot reader’s hierarchy of needs! 📚💘🙋🏻‍♀️🧘🏻🔮

Without traditional study of tarot as a system - the structure and ordering of the cards, numerology, elements reflected in the suits, mythological archetypes of the Majors, we wouldn’t have a solid foundation for our practice to rest on. We’d be making it all up as we went.

But without making room for our intuition, all we’d be doing is regurgitating learned facts from a book with no heart or openness to our inner wisdom or our connection to others and everything around us. Where is the magic in that?

Add to these two an open heart and mind, a simple grounding ritual (3 deep breaths with my eyes closed often do the trick!) and well-worded questions that allow us to go deep, and we are all set for a simple but meaningful tarot practice!

What would be in your tarot reader’s hierarchy of needs? And would the foundation of your pyramid be something different?
