What is your personalized tarot life card? In today’s post, I’ll help you figure out which tarot card is your life card, otherwise known as your soul card, birth card, or life path card.
Watch or read on below to learn what your tarot life card represents. I will also walk you through the tarot birth card calculating process.
What is a tarot life card, or birth card?
I don’t know about you, but a big question I’m constantly asking myself is, “What is my soul’s purpose?” What have I been put on this earth to do? How can I be my best self?

In numerology, there’s a way to figure out your birth number, or your life number. (Those are the same thing.) How that connects to tarot is that each life number has a corresponding tarot card.
Ready to figure out your tarot life card? Let’s do it! And if you’re more of a reader, there’s a video below as well!
How to figure out your life number (aka birth number)
What you do to figure out your life number is to add up the digits of your birth date and reduce down until you get a single digit.
Let’s say you were born on October 13, 1989. Here’s how you would add up the numbers in that birthdate:
10 + 13 + 1989 = 2012
Next, add the digits in 2012.
2 + 0 + 1 + 2 = 5.
So if you were born on October 13, 1989, your single digit life number, or birth number, is five. That’s it!
But what happens if you do your calculation and don’t get a neat one-digit number, like five? What if you get, say, 17?
Then you just keep adding digits until you get a single-digit number (that is, a number from one to nine). For 17, you would then do 1 + 7 to get a life number of 8. For 19, you would do 1 + 9 to get 10, and then you would do the additional step of 1 + 0 to get 1 as your single-digit life number.
Find your tarot life card
The cool way that numerology connects to tarot in terms of your birth number, or life number, is that there is a tarot card that represents each number. That tarot card, then, is your life card.
So what is your tarot life card? Well, now that you’ve calculated your life number, you simply look up the Major Arcana card with the same number to find out! This means that everybody’s life card, or birth card, is one of the first nine cards in the tarot deck.
Below are the tarot life card meanings associated with these first nine cards in the Major Arcana of the tarot (skipping over The Fool, of course, which is coded as zero). The tarot deck featured in the images is the Modern Witch Tarot, in case you’re wondering.
Life number 1: The Magician
If you are a Magician, you are a powerful and prolific creator and manifestor. Your soul’s purpose is to bring your dreams and desires to life through your inner strength and resourcefulness. Magicians are dedicated to their craft, whatever that craft may be. You continuously hone your skills so that when inspiration strikes, you are poised and ready to manifest your vision into reality. If you are a Magician, you are an innovator, an engineer, an artist, and a trailblazer.
Life number 2: The High Priestess
If you are a High Priestess, you are a wise fountain of knowledge. Your soul’s purpose is to turn every stone, follow every bread crumb, and unravel the universe’s mysteries. Priestesses are curious, intelligent, and relentless researchers. They have an uncanny ability to understand even the most complicated of puzzles not just because of their intellectual prowess, which is unmatched, but because of their intuitive intelligence as well. If you are a High Priestess, you are a guru, a philosopher, an oracle, and a beacon of light for others.
Life number 3: The Empress
If your tarot birth card is the Empress, you are the embodiment of the Divine Feminine (which exists to some degree in any and all genders). Your soul’s purpose is to become one with the Universe and flow with the cycles of your body, the seasons, and the Universe as a whole. You understand the magic of divine timing, of trusting the Universe, of doing your part but then letting things happen as they are meant to, without the force and without the tireless hustle. If you are an Empress, you are a nurturer, a therapist, a natural and organic creator.
Life number 4: The Emperor
If you are an Emperor, you are the embodiment of the Divine Masculine (which exists to some degree in any and all genders). Your soul’s purpose is to structure, organize, and govern your domain with wisdom that you have gained over a lifetime of diligence and self-discipline. You are master of your time, your thoughts, and your passions. You know when to let loose and when to compartmentalize and get stuff done. If you are an Emperor, you are a ruler, a leader, a mighty protector and guide.
Life number 5: The Hierophant
If you are a Hierophant, you are a keeper of ancient wisdom. Your soul’s purpose is to develop your spiritual self and walk the path of spiritual fulfillment and enlightenment. Your soul feels most alive when you are asking and acquiring answers to life’s biggest questions. You may enjoy being steeped in and preserving a rich and ancient tradition, or you may feel called to create your own spiritual path or movement. If you are a Hierophant, you are a community leader, a teacher, an advisor and guide.
Life number 6: The Lovers
If you are a Lover, you are an authentic soul who is comfortable with vulnerability. Your soul’s purpose is to hold space for those around you, knowing that the best connections are made when we bare our souls to others and show them that their souls are safe with us. You are clear about your values and principles and while you do not judge others’ paths, you are clear about your boundaries. If you are a Lover, you are a confidante, a mirror, a partner, and a healer.
Life number 7: The Chariot
If you are a Chariot, you are an ambitious and determined maverick. Your soul’s purpose is to combine sheer willpower and drive with the divine inspiration and guidance you seek. You are a charter of courses and taker of action no matter what obstacles are thrown before you. You are the engine of any team you join. If you are a Chariot, you are an explorer, a pathfinder, a risk-taker, and an entrepreneur.
Life number 8: Strength
If you are Strength, you are a role model and inspiration to others. Your soul’s purpose is to be your authentic self and use your influence to bring more peace and joy into the world. Strength shows great natural instincts and an infectious character that can make friends and win over enemies easily. If you are Strength, you are an artist, an influencer, an activist, and thought leader.
Life number 9: The Hermit
If you are Hermit, you are an introspective, soul-searcher. Your soul’s purpose is self-discovery and gaining wisdom and understanding from past experiences, perhaps even past lives. Hermits are comfortable with solitude and appreciate the immense value of quiet contemplation and meditation. This means that when a Hermit chooses to speak or act, the world listens. If you are a Hermit, you are a thinker, a philosopher, a writer, a sage.

I was actually very surprised how much my life card resonated with me! Great post!
Awesome, Danika! Which one is your life card? I’m the Hierophant.
I was pretty surprised to find out I’m a Hermit! I’m definitely introspective and an over thinker at times though, so I guess it fits.
Ooh, a Hermit! I feel like the Hermit is also an old soul – so unassumingly wise. Love it!
But what about man?
I am The Hermit. It explains me, however, my creative side (writing) has kind of taken a back seat.
Mine has too, Ellynn, and I hate it! My dream is to live in a tiny coastal town and be a full-time writer. <3
I never would have guessed I am the Hermit! That’s pretty cool! I guess I’m wise, lol. 🙂
Ooh, I love the Hermit, Felicia! What a great one.
