If you bought a gorgeous artsy, abstract, novelty, or minimalist tarot deck as your first deck and now you are having an extremely hard time learning tarot card meanings, this reel is for you.

Once you become fluent with traditional tarot meanings and symbolism, a wonderful thing happens. Over time, you memorize the deck and the meanings and you could give a tarot reading on ANY tarot deck! Even a deck of playing cards if you wanted! 🙌🏼✨⁠

So definitely save all those beautiful tarot decks! They just might not be the best LEARNER deck for you, that’s all.⁠

Tarot is a system, which means we can count on all tarot decks having certain elements, like the Major Arcana, the Minor Arcana, and court cards. But once you start exploring the world of tarot and the vast variety of decks that are out there, you’ll start to notice that there are three main tarot systems: Marseilles, Rider-Waite-Smith, and Thoth.⁠

Above is a teeny tiny primer (there’s only so much to say in an IG infographic after all!) to help familiarize yourself with a few key differences between them to help you learn more about the tarot deck(s) you have. A summary:⁠

🃏 MARSEILLES: One of the oldest types of tarot consisting of unillustrated pip cards that rely on numerology for interpretation.⁠
⁠
🃏 RIDER WAITE SMITH: Newer but arguably most recognizable tarot imagery, with illustrated majors as well as minors and more religious imagery. Switches the positions of Strength and Justice from the Marseilles deck.⁠
⁠
🃏 THOTH: Named after the Egyptian god of knowledge and magic, perhaps the most abstract and occult-steeped of tarot decks. Ascribes different names to the cards, like the court cards, compared to Marseilles and RWS traditions.⁠

I’m a RWS girlie myself but have been studying the Marseilles more in recent years as well. The Thoth remains mostly shrouded in mystery for me so far…🔮

Welcome to Taurus Season, tarot friends! Dare I say I LOVE the questions in this Taurus Season Tarot Spread? They are ones I simply don’t ask myself often enough, but are so appropriate when Taurus energy is guiding us this time of the year. In case you can’t see the tarot questions in this four-card tarot spread, here they are below:⁠

The final question is especially important to me and reveals my tarot reading style. I don’t ask my tarot cards to decide for me, and I don’t “entrust my fate to silly cards,” like so many ignorant and judgmental critics assume is happening when we work with tarot cards. The cards, especially when reading for ourselves, act as prompts to help us go deeper into our intuitive wisdom and make more aligned choices. 💜

One of my favorite things to share with fellow tarot lovers and students of tarot has been TAROT QUESTION IDEAS.

I share a bunch here AND in my Substack newsletter in the form of tarot spreads for specific situations. And after awhile, I realized not only the types of tarot questions I happen to like most (open-ended, self-reflective, nurturing, and empowering) but that a lot of us run out of things to ask our tarot deck every now and then and need ideas!

I’ve been struggling in the mental health depart

I’ve been struggling in the mental health department lately. Specifically, I seem to be waking up experiencing feelings of overwhelm and anger INSTANTLY - finding myself at war with the day before it’s even begun and spending the rest of it trying to regain my footing with varying levels of success.

When my therapist reminded me that we ultimately choose our emotions, and that if I am staying angry each morning, I am for some reason choosing to do so, I all but bit her head off.

Even though she’s probably right.

I may not actively wake up and tap my fingertips together like an evil maniac wondering, “What inner tempest from the fiery depths of hell can we conjure up and release upon my mortal soul?” But, perhaps I am choosing to dwell in thoughts that perpetuate my anger and irritability rather than choosing thoughts that have a chance of balancing or neutralizing the negative emotional reaction I no longer wish to have…

This week’s tarot newsletter revisits the meditation on the Sun tarot card that I wrote last summer when a similar dark mood was upon me. It also talks about reading tarot reversals! AND paid subscribers get an exclusive tarot spread. ☀️
